The EU Green Deal is a one trillion euro policy plan for Europe that aims to ensure “no net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050, economic growth decoupled from resource use and no person and no place left behind.” DRIFT believes big behavioural, social, and cultural change is urgently needed across Europe to achieve these ambitions policy priorities.

That’s why we have joined SHARED GREEN DEAL. The project is centered around 24 separate ‘social experiments’ across Europe that look at how organisations and individuals can work together to make our daily lives more sustainable.

SHARED GREEN DEAL, or ‘Social sciences & Humanities for Achieving a Responsible, Equitable and Desirable GREEN DEAL’, is a five-year, five-million euro project in the European Union’s Innovation Programme Horizon 2020, made up of 22 partners.

The project is tasked with running social experiments across six priorities for a better Europe: clean energy, circular economy, efficient renovations, sustainable mobility, sustainable food, and preserving biodiversity, all of which contribute to the climate action and zero pollution ambitions of the Green Deal.

The DRIFT team has organised an ambitious and inclusive transition arena with selected high-level participants from diverse local movements, policy groups, and research institutes to explore how to connect with others to contribute to much-needed change across Europe via the Green Deal.

We have also created a typology and online database of local and regional European initiatives currently leveraging social and cultural factors, in their pursuit of ambitions that align with the Green Deal.

As far as topics go, we will focus on sustainable food experiments. Together with Slow Food Youth Network, we are bringing together diverse European players from across the food system. We hope to empower them with knowledge and capacities for transformative change.

We are excited to be putting some of DRIFT’s core ideas into play around just transitions and action research.

Why this is such an important project to us

No matter how disruptive COVID-19 was, a global pandemic alone won’t permanently change the unsustainable and unjust threads in the fabric of our lives. And with war on Europe’s doorstep pressuring our energy and food systems (among others), these are hard times to determine what’s best and fairest for EU citizens.

We are acutely aware that big behavioural, social, and cultural change is urgently needed across Europe to achieve the ambitious EU Green Deal policy priorities.
