Sem works as both a researcher and advisor, at Drift, focusing on the energy transition and natural resource management. He is especially interested in how governments can influence and accelerate transitions and what tools they have at their disposal to do so. Currently he is involved in several national and international projects on themes as energy prosumption, the circular economy, sustainable mobility, and natural capital, and he is teaching on transitions theory.
Before starting at Drift in a professional role in 2017 he conducted his master thesis’ research at Drift looking at the financial relationships between the Dutch State and the fossil fuel industry, providing relevant insights in the role of government(s) and their assets in sustainability transitions. He holds an Msc. in Integrated Natural Resource Management from the Humboldt University in Berlin (2017), and a bachelor in economics and environmental policy from Amsterdam University College (Honours, 2012).
