Daan holds a double degree MSc in Public Policy and Human Development from United Nations University-MERIT and Maastricht University. Here he followed the specialisation in Innovation, Institutions and Development and wrote his thesis on an African currency innovation for sustainable development. Prior to this, he completed a MSc in Architecture at Hasselt University.
Throughout his interdisciplinary educational and professional experiences, he focused on environmentally and socially sustainable urban development in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Africa. In his architecture studies, he did this from a socio-technical and planning perspective and in his public policy studies from a socio-economic perspective. He worked on this topic in international design studios and at PJ Carew consulting (a South-African sustainable energy consulting firm).
Before joining DRIFT, he interned at the UN University Institute for Environment and Human Security where he worked on linking research to practice, and researched innovations, in the field of food, energy and water and its nexus; and did research on climate finance.
Daan is passionate about the facilitation and acceleration of (urban) economic sustainability transitions, especially through complementary currencies and the co-creation and co-designing of nature-based solutions in cities.
