That old commons cliché: wherever market and state actors fail, communities step up. In the second and final RESHARE episode of the DRIFT Transitions Podcast, we hear that that’s not a given and how in those cases hybridisation can help.

Shared mobility is key for future transport systems that don’t break the planet and ruin where we live. So what if we could greatly accelerate such mobility by combining it with a way of living in which we are less isolated and more connected?

In this episode, we hear from Paola Pucci and Giovanni Lanza from the Politecnico di Milano. These researchers are composing an atlas of accessibility practices. In doing so, they are finding ways in which the commons can come through to make mobility become more resilient and sustainable, even when the individuals involved have different aims.

Their research shows that commoning is not a ready-made cure-all. In places where companies and governments don’t deliver, community initiatives can struggle with a lack of capital as well.

So often, the smart move for initiatives is not to ignore companies and governments, but to team up. It’s called hybridisation. And Paola and Giovanni know some prime examples where the housing domain is helping out.
