A recent study used the X-curve framework to assess the state of the sustainable food system transition in the Netherlands. Through four stakeholder workshops, researchers identified four distinct transition pathways: protein transition, regenerative farming practices, alternative food networks, and circular practices.

While many promising initiatives are emerging, the analysis found that overall transition is stagnating at the level of emergence and institutionalization. There is no comprehensive phase-out policy of unsustainable practices, and institutional support for scaling innovative practices is limited. The study concludes that more integrated policy action is needed to break the current transition stalemate and accelerate progress towards a sustainable food system.
