By contributing to the development of Europe’s leadership in using and applying energy-related Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), Energy-SHIFTS has significantly enhanced the policy impact of energy-SSH and accelerate shifts to low-carbon energy systems.
Energy-SHIFTS (Energy Social sciences & Humanities Innovation Forum Targeting the SET-Plan) has contributed to a European Energy Union that places societal needs centrally, by further developing Europe’s leadership in using and applying energy-related Social Sciences and Humanities (energy-SSH).
Our consortium has brought together 4 leading interdisciplinary research institutes with 3 highly respected policy, industry and communications organisations from across the energy-SSH field, to create an innovative and inclusive Forum. Our partners have had significant energy-SSH H2020 project experience, direct working links with the EU’s Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) communities, extensive networks in the energy domain, and represent excellent coverage across SSH disciplines and across Europe. This has enabled us to maximise the impact of our Forum delivery within an intensive 2-year project.
Energy-SHIFTS has aimed to change this through research-policy dialogue. The project has directly connected researchers working across the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) with those on the energy policy ‘frontline’. In the first half of 2020, we have matched 21 Policy Fellows – which included one team of three – to 3-6 carefully matched energy-SSH researchers each, for an online conversation and exchange.
This report has therefore included 19 full Fellowship reports, divided over five thematic categories:
- Citizen Engagement
- Social Acceptance
- Just Transitions
- Behaviours
- and Human Capital.
We have described the Fellows’ policy context, policy challenges, how they were matched with their Associates, main discussion points and SSH insights generated, as well as how these were translated to policy impacts.
