As a researcher at DRIFT, Bonno specialises in the social-institutional dimensions of the energy transition. He currently works on the EU-funded projects PROSEU and Energy-SHIFTS. He is co-developing an integrative framework on energy prosumerism and participates in current efforts to strengthen the inputs of Social Science and Humanities insights into energy policy.
Bonno is committed to critical and thorough social science research. Beyond slogans and partisanship, it should show the complexity of today’s sustainability problems, disclose the range of possible solutions, and clarify the normative considerations at stake. Focusing on the governance and politics of transitions, he has studied, lectured and published on various societal issues: Speed measures on Dutch roads, the unconditional Basic Income, sheltered workspaces, delta management, automated vehicles, the legacies of festivals, electricity blackouts, circular economy, and network-oriented mobility policy. Alongside with this empirical fascination, Bonno enjoys work combining different strands of social theory, and with some methodological finesse.
After his studies at the University of Amsterdam (environmental planning and socio-political philosophy), Bonno concluded his PhD thesis at the Erasmus University in 2012. This work on system innovation in the Dutch traffic management field was done at the Governance of Complex Systems research group (dep. of Public Administration). After 2 postdoc years at EUR and a short assignment at the Rathenau instituut (Den Haag), he joined the Université Libre de Bruxelles in 2014, where he still has a part-time appointment. An experienced chess player, Bonno holds the title of FIDE master since 2003. He is also an enthusiastic amateur in forest walks, photography and gardening.
