Northern Netherlands Connected

Date 25 Feb, 2025

A lot is changing in the way the Netherlands organises mobility. However, the mobility transition is not a one-size-fits-all. The transition in the northern provinces of the Netherlands is different from the one in the Randstad, in challenges as well as solutions. In the first discussions of the transition-arena North Netherlands, it became clear that there is room in the northern provinces to do things differently. And that’s what we want!

Transition vision for a social, sustainable, and just mobility system in the three northern provinces

Continuing along the current path means stagnation. Focusing solely on electrification is not a solution for energy and resource scarcity. Encouraging individual solutions leads to the depletion of collective services. And focusing on market-based solutions does not work for areas with lower population density. Even now, people are being left behind, and despite the extensive social safety net in the northern Netherlands, this group is growing.

This can be done differently. We advocate for a mobility system that not only makes use of the safety net that characterizes the northern Netherlands but also contributes to strengthening it. A mobility system in that does what it should do: connect. The result of these discussions is a transition vision for a social, sustainable, and just mobility system in the three northern provinces, based on three transition paths:

  • From the community as a safety net to the community as a foundation. Leverage the strength of the northern Dutch inhabitants with appropriate solutions based on local context, with decision-making power and autonomy for residents.
  • From the city as a hub to cities with responsibility. Cities with responsibility facilitate the sustainability and reduction of travel movements for people from rural areas, who are increasingly dependent on the city. Taking responsibility can also mean that the patient does not have to travel from the village to the city, but the physiotherapist visits the village once a week.
  • From an isolated journey to a link in transitions. With mobility contributing to social connection, the energy transition, and a resilient society, we are talking about much more than just getting from A to B. In this, mobility is not a goal in itself, but an essential link between societal challenges in a future-proof North Netherlands.
