How does fundamental societal change work? And how can we radically turn the tide in the midst of a climate crisis, biodiversity crisis, and growing inequality? In the DRIFT Transitions podcast, Wouter Mulders and colleagues have conversations with experts about how real change happens — in theory and in practice. Because by understanding transitions toward sustainability and justice, we can accelerate them. Or at least, that’s what we hope.

Our society often seems to stand still for years — and then suddenly, everything changes very quickly. And while sustainable innovations may be springing up like mushrooms, very few actually break through. To understand this, you might need to start looking at fundamental change differently: through the lens of transition theory. In the episodes of the DRIFT Transitions podcast, Wouter Mulders and other DRIFTers question a range of experts about transition science and practice.

In the first season, we introduce you to the basics of transition thinking. How do systems change? And why do sustainable innovations so often remain stuck in the margins? In a short opening episode, colleague Audrey Wientjes explains the X-curve — a simple model that visualizes how old systems fade out while new ones emerge. In the following episodes, we zoom in on topics like biodiversity restoration, environmental justice, and global inequality. Together with guests like Samuelle van Deutekom, Daniëlle Hirsch, and Joyeeta Gupta, we explore how transitions work in practice, and what it takes to make them just and inclusive.

In season two, we shift from theory to practice. In the three-part audio series Whoosh, we travel to the UK coastline to explore how the transition to offshore wind energy is experienced by those living, working, and caring for these landscapes. Along the way, we meet kite surfers, park rangers, local residents, wildlife experts, and policy advisers. We ask them what justice, nature, and energy mean to them in the midst of a fast-growing industry. Through these conversations, we reveal often unheard stories — about seabirds, protest movements, mental well-being, and the value of silence in a world filled with turbines.
