The BIONEXT project presents three European case studies that show: addressing injustice is often overlooked as a key component in accelerating transitions to a nature-positive society. And to amplify that message, we’ve created an eye-catching and brain-stimulating mini magazine.

Embrace the heat
There’s plenty of conflict in the transition to a nature-positive society. Dealing with conflict is like turning a compost heap: it creates heat which breaks down the scraps of injustice to create a superb substance with which you can grow something new. Without heat, nothing transforms – and the rot leaks out in more dangerous ways.
So – in the fight for nature and biodiversity – embrace the heat of conflict like you would stimulate the funk of a compost heap. That’s what stands out from the experiences of policy-workers and other involved professionals ‘doing justice’ in three nature-positive practices: nature-inclusive agriculture in The Netherlands, nature-on-prescription in Belgium and continuous-cover forestry in Finland.
A zine for you
Zines are small-batch magazine publications, often created without the help of a publisher or financier. Creators of zines (also called ‘zinesters’) see these circumstances not as limitations but rather as ideal conditions to create something experimental and outspoken.
Research institute DRIFT created a zine together with various experts also involved in the BIONEXT project to hammer home the essence of what ‘doing justice’ ought to be in nature-positive practices. With 8 small pages no bigger in total than an A3 sheet, getting to the point was non-negotiable. Using cut-and-paste visuals, a quirky printing technique (risography) and a surprising metaphor throughout, the resulting booklet is something that will certainly spark conversations when tactically dropped at the right meeting room, conference or lunch table!
