Thomas Fransen Researcher & Advisor

Thomas Fransen works as a researcher and advisor at DRIFT, focusing on transitions in various fields, particularly the power dynamics within coalitions for change. A central question in this work is what sacrifices are made to the transformative potential of ideas when they are put into action, and who is left behind or left out in these discussions. Thomas is currently involved in projects that range from area-focused working in the province of South Holland to analyzing master plans for major Dutch infrastructure companies to engaging youth at the EU level.
Thomas holds a bachelor's degree in Sustainable Innovation and a master's degree in Sustainability Transformations and Innovation from Eindhoven University of Technology. During their bachelor's program, they worked on democratizing discussions about the social and sustainable impacts of food supply chains by participating in a youth think tank and the Honors Academy, and by founding the FoodRoots Foundation. In their master's program, Thomas further explored how individuals and organizations can gain power that is not rooted in having money or being in a high-status position, particularly by learning from civil society organizations and cooperatives. After completing their studies, Thomas undertook an artist residency at ArteSumapaz in Colombia, focusing on how art can contribute to struggles for transformative change.
In their free time, Thomas is fascinated by stories—whether in the form of conversations, books, movies, or podcasts. They also attempt to create their own stories through theater and writing. When not immersed in storytelling, you can find Thomas among people and/or trees.
