Sustainable and just cities are human settlements that strive to enable life – in the present and future, for humans and other beings and nature. Most importantly, sustainable and just cities ensure access to what enables us not only to survive but to thrive and flourish. But how exactly do we approach justice in the urban context? What may be the tensions between ecological sustainability and social justice, and how do we address these?
In this webinar, we invite Dr. Panagiota Kotsila and prof. Dr. Isabelle Anguelovski from the Barcelona Lab for Urban Environmental Justice and Sustainability (BCNUEJ) to share their research on urban environmental justice and green gentrification.
Panagiota Kotsila will discuss how to approach environmental justice in the urban context and share examples on the main drivers of injustice in the context of urban sustainability, as identified in the UrbanA project on #SustainableJustCities.
Isabelle Anguelovski will discuss insights from the the GreenLulus project on #GreenGentrification and share a recently published report about Policy and Planning Tools for Urban Green Justice.
In between the talks, there will be room for discussion in smaller groups for participants to share their experiences, insights and questions around urban environmental justice and green gentrification, followed by a plenary Q&A session in which participants can share their questions with the speakers.
The webinar will be facilitated by Karlijn Schipper, Frank van Steenbergen and Flor Avelino, who will also share more information about the UrbanA project on #SustainableJustCities and how you can be part of the UrbanA community. During the webinar, artist Carlotta Cataldi will be present to harvest the insights from the webinar in a graphic illustration.
